Basically, you can multiply a hemp palm yourself. For this you need seeds, which you can harvest yourself with a lot of luck or buy in a garden shop. But it takes a lot of time until a real hemp palm has grown from a seed.

Harvest or buy seeds
It is rather rare for your hemp palm to produce germinable seeds. Only adult plants flower. Since hemp palms are dioecious, you need a male and a female plant to pollinate the flowers. When the flower is fertilized, an edible fruit is formed in which the seeds ripen. After the flowering period, the flowers remain on the palm tree until they have dried up.
Hemp palms that are only grown indoors rarely bloom. You will have a little more luck if you keep your fan palm outdoors all year round.
If you want to be sure that you get germinable seeds for the cultivation of new hemp palms, it is better to buy them from specialist shops.
How to prepare the seed for sowing
The seed of the hemp palm has a very hard shell. Before you sow it, let it soak in lukewarm water for at least 24 hours. Many gardening experts also swear by roughing up the seeds with sandpaper before sowing.
The pre-treatment shortens the already very long germination time.
Sow the hemp palm
The best time for sowing is from February to April.
- Prepare seed pots (16.68€).
- sow seeds
- cover thinly with soil
- set up bright and warm
- keep moist but not wet
After sowing, all you have to do is have a lot of patience. It can take up to a year for the seeds of a hemp palm to germinate. It then takes another two to three years before you get offshoots.
As soon as the young plants have reached a height of about ten centimeters, plant them in individual pots and continue to care for them normally. Hemp palms are only hardy after a few years. They are only allowed to go outdoors permanently when they are at least three to four years old and have grown sufficiently large.
tips
You usually have to pollinate a female hemp palm blossom yourself. First stroke the male and then the female flower with a brush.
