Dwarf date palms are only partially hardy. They tolerate slight frost temperatures, which, however, are often exceeded in this country. It is better to overwinter the dwarf date palm in a bucket in the house or in a sheltered spot outdoors.

The dwarf date palm can stay outside all year round - with the right winter protection

The dwarf date palm tolerates slightly below zero temperatures

Like all date palms, the dwarf date palm can cope with slightly freezing temperatures. However, these must not fall below six degrees, as the palm tree will then freeze to death.

Overwintering dwarf date palms in the house properly

In the house, the dwarf date palm needs a frost-free room to overwinter. For example:

  • cool greenhouses
  • Corridors with windows
  • Cellar rooms with windows
  • garages
  • garden houses

The rooms may not be heated, but the temperatures should not fall below freezing.

You should install plant lamps in dark wintering places so that the palm is bright enough.

Overwinter dwarf date palms outdoors

You can try to overwinter the dwarf date palm outside in a sheltered location. If you don't have a greenhouse, this is sometimes the best solution, as the palm trees can grow quite large and take up a lot of space.

Place the bucket on an insulating surface and wrap the pot with burlap.

The location must be as bright as possible. The palm should be protected from drafts and too much winter moisture.

Don't water too much in winter

During the winter, the dwarf date palm needs much less water. Water so that the root ball never dries out completely. Don't fertilize during the winter.

If the palm is in a warmer place, you should spray it in water from time to time to increase the humidity. This measure prevents pest infestation.

After hibernation, carefully acclimate to light

After the winter you have to slowly get your dwarf date palm back to light and air. Otherwise, the UV light can cause brown spots on the leaves.

Place the bucket in a semi-shady or shady place for one to two weeks before exposing the dwarf date palm to direct sun again.

tips

Dwarf date palms like to spend the warm season on the balcony or terrace. They prefer a partially shaded or shady location where they are also protected from too much moisture.
