Most palm species are not hardy and should therefore not be left outside during the cold season. Frost-resistant specimens planted in the garden always need adequate winter protection.

Only a few palm species tolerate frost

Light winter protection

In very mild areas it is sufficient for frost-resistant palms to tie the leaves together and protect the roots from frost with a thick layer of mulch.

Medium winter protection

When the temperature is below zero or in the case of hardy palm trees that are planted in the garden in slightly cooler regions, it is advisable to additionally wrap the plant in a special plant fleece or jute mat.

Very good winter protection

This is recommended wherever the palm tree standing outside would also be exposed to severe frost. A temporary greenhouse that you can build inexpensively yourself out of wood and foil is ideal.

If it gets very cold, it is advisable to additionally heat the palm house. A fan heater with a frost protection function is very suitable. Open oil lamps are often recommended. However, we would like to advise against these for fire safety reasons.
