Well cared for palm trees develop a very extensive root system. It is so powerful that it is even capable of blasting the planter. Then at the latest it is high time to implement. Sometimes the root ball has grown so big that it hardly fits into the new pot. But can the roots be cut back without hesitation?

Healthy roots should not be damaged when repotting

Do not shorten healthy roots

Palm trees are very sensitive to damage to the root system. This is also the reason why so many indoor palms die from waterlogging and root rot. Therefore, healthy roots should not be shortened.

So that the root ball does not fall apart and the fine parts of the plant are damaged, it is advisable to water the palm well before repotting.

If the plant cannot be lifted out of the pot, the container may have to be dismantled. Please do not tear or tug at the trunk to get the palm tree out of the pot. As a result, the palm is often damaged and dies despite the best care and fresh substrate.

Rotted and dead root parts

These should be removed in any case, as they can begin to rot in the moist soil and promote the dreaded root rot.

Healthy roots are bright and crisp. You can recognize damaged plant parts by the following criteria:

  • The life veins are brownish in color.
  • They feel squishy soft.
  • The roots often give off a putrid smell.

First remove the old substrate surrounding the root system. The damaged parts are cut off with a very sharp knife. Thoroughly clean the cutting tools before this care measure so that no bacteria can penetrate the plant via the open cut surfaces.

spiral of roots on the ground

Sometimes the root system forms a spiral at the bottom of the container, which is already growing out of the drainage hole. You can also cut these off when repotting.

tips

For reasons of space, palm trees are often sold in containers that are far too small. Therefore, repot new acquisitions into a larger pot as soon as possible. In this way, the Mediterranean ambassador can develop as desired.
