Like all plants, palm trees also need regular watering in order to thrive well and vigorously. It can be fatal with these plants to aimlessly distribute the water as you please. They are guaranteed to be too dry for a few days and much too wet after watering. The delicate palms would quickly resent this treatment and wither away.
Not all palm trees need regular water
The water requirement
This depends on the natural habitat of the palm trees. While those specimens that thrive in tropical jungles have a fairly high water requirement, palm gardens growing in dry areas are content with less liquid. However, all palm trees have one thing in common: the root ball should never dry out completely. They are also extremely sensitive to waterlogging.
Water during the growing season
This extends from about April to October. The water requirement is higher during this period than during the hibernation. Pour as follows:
- Do a daily thumb test
- If the top five centimeters of the substrate feel damp, it does not need to be watered yet.
The earth is dry? Then you should reach for the watering can:
- Always use lime-free water. Boiled, filtered or tap water that has been left overnight is suitable.
- Pour well until liquid runs out of the drainage hole.
- Tip away the excess moisture after a few minutes.
Constantly wet feet threaten root rot. The root system can then no longer absorb water and the palm tree dries up, even though it has been sufficiently watered.

In the cold season, the water requirement depends on the location of the plant. But even palm trees that are in a warm room need to be watered less often. Here, too, you can do well with the thumb test, because the root ball must not dry out completely, even in winter.

Not too big palm trees you can dive. Place the planter with the root ball in a bucket. It should contain enough water to completely submerge the pot. When no more air bubbles rise, remove the palm. Before putting it in its original place, let it drain for a few minutes.
