Plant pests or fungi are not always to blame when a palm tree thrives poorly, shows discolored leaves or threatens to die. In most cases, easily remediable care errors are the reason. Once parked, many palm trees recover.

Dry palms can often be revived

Brown-yellow spots on the fronds

If you have placed the plant from the dark winter quarters directly in the blazing sun, yellowish or brown colored areas often appear on the leaves. They are a symptom of sunburn, which unfortunately cannot be reversed.

prevention

After the winter dormancy, carefully acclimate the palm to the changed outdoor conditions.

yellowing and dying of the fronds

Sucking pests are often responsible for this damage. Other causes can be:

  • lack of water
  • poured too much
  • too little light
  • iron deficiency.

remedy

  • Control pests with a suitable means.
  • Check your watering habits. Water the palm whenever the top inches of the substrate feel dry.
  • Is there still enough soil in the pot? If the plant has little soil, it can hardly store any water.
  • If the palm tree is too dark, bring it to a bright place. A place where the sun reaches the fronds for several hours is ideal.
  • If you suspect iron deficiency, switch to a fertilizer that contains the important trace element in sufficient quantities.

The foliage is drying up

If not only individual leaves turn brown, but many fans dry up, in most cases you meant too well with the palm tree and watered it. The permanently wet substrate leads to root rot, the plant can no longer absorb water and dries up.

remedy

To check, pot the plant and check the root system. Healthy roots are crisp and brightly colored. It is best to put the palm tree in fresh palm soil and water it significantly less in the future.

On the other hand, if the substrate is bone dry, the cause is a lack of water. In this case, water more frequently and whenever the soil feels dry. Wait for water to come out of the root ball. However, be sure to dump the excess moisture away, otherwise there is a risk of root rot.

tips

If the palm tree still has at least one strong green frond and the heart of the palm tree is not damaged, there is hope that the plant will recover with good care. Have a little patience with your Mediterranean roommate, she will recover quickly and reward you with healthy growth.
