However, all palm trees have one thing in common: They prefer loose soil that allows plenty of air to reach the roots and stores water well. At the same time, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs.

Conventional potting soil does not meet these special requirements and usually has to be enriched with additives. The following are suitable for loosening up:

  • fine quartz sand
  • Quartz chips
  • expanded clay beads.

If you use topsoil as a basis, it is advisable to mix in horn shavings (€32.93) or guano (€121.99) as a starting aid.

Palm trees, whose natural home is moist forest areas, love acidic soils. For these plants has become a mixture of

  • coir substrate
  • Earth
  • bark humus

proven, which can be additionally enriched with a small amount of calcareous clay and sand.

None of the commercially available, ready-mixed palm soils are suitable for all species without exception. In the case of varieties that prefer calcareous soil, additional liming is required for healthy growth.
