Many palm species can only be propagated by seeds. In practice, this proves to be quite tedious and is not always promising. However, some varieties also form shoots that grow into magnificent plants much more quickly.

You cannot cut offshoots from palm trees
In German usage, some indoor plants are called palms, such as the yucca, which are not “real” palms at all. Due to the structure of the palm tree, only the side shoots, which are referred to as Kindel in technical jargon, can be separated and used for the offspring.
In order for this to succeed, it is important that the seedlings have already formed small roots and at least four fronds.
When can cuttings be cut?
The ideal time for cutting seedlings is spring. The young plants then have enough time until winter to develop strong roots and more leaves.
method
To ensure that the palm tree is not damaged, you should definitely observe the following points:
- Always use very sharp cutting tools.
- Secateurs or a knife, possibly with teeth, are suitable.
- Disinfect tool to prevent pathogens from entering through the open interface.
Unlike many plants, the cuttings must not be placed in water for root formation. They would immediately rot and die.
Insertion
Leave the seedlings until the cut surface dries. Only then are they planted in a suitable substrate. An ideal soil is:
- Gives the newly forming roots sufficient stability.
- The small seedlings supplied with nutrients.
- On the other hand, it does not have too high a nutrient content.
- Ensures good ventilation of the root system.
The composition of the soil depends on the natural location and growth of the plants. Palm trees from desert regions prefer dry and sandy substrates, while those that thrive in tropical forests prefer heavy soil. All palm plants have one thing in common: they are very sensitive to waterlogging. Therefore, place a drainage layer of expanded clay (€19.73) in the pot in which you place the Kindel.
The care of the small palm tree
Place the cutting in a light, warm and not too sunny place. The optimal temperature is between 20 and 23 degrees.
It is very important to water the palm tree regularly. Not only too much water, but also permanent drought inhibits root formation and can lead to the offspring dying.
It is watered whenever the upper centimeters of the soil feel dry. On hot days and in sandy substrates, it may be necessary to water the seedling daily. To avoid root rot, be sure to pour away the excess liquid that collects in the saucer.
tips
Only start fertilizing the young plant after six months. Since the palm is still very small, half the dosage of a commercially available palm fertilizer is sufficient.
