Few plants are as easy to propagate as ivy. All you have to do is cut a few cuttings and plant them or put them in a water glass. When and how to take cuttings and how to grow new offshoots from your ivy.

Cut cuttings all year round

Whether you want to grow offshoots from ivy outdoors or from your indoor ivy - this is almost always possible with cuttings.

Indoor plant cuttings can be harvested all year round. In the case of outdoor plants, propagation works best with cuttings cut in the spring, but is also possible without any problems until early autumn.

Keep the cuttings in a glass of water or plant them

As cuttings, cut off young shoots with a length of about ten centimeters. The shoots should be strong and may be slightly woody at the bottom.

  • Remove lower leaves
  • Slightly score the bottom of the stems
  • If necessary, shorten the shoot tips
  • Place the cuttings in a glass with tap water
  • alternatively stick cuttings in prepared pots
  • set up bright and warm

By shortening the shoot tips and scoring the stalks, you will ensure that the cuttings root faster and become stronger.

Make sure that there is always enough water in the glass or that the soil is moist but not wet.

Set up the cuttings at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight on the window.

How to care for the offshoots of the ivy

The cuttings from your ivy form the first roots within a few days. You can see the progress with the naked eye when caring for it in a glass of water. When growing in a pot, wait until the first new leaf buds appear.

When the roots are two to three centimeters long, plant the cuttings from the glass in prepared plant pots. Be careful when doing this, as the delicate roots break easily.

You continue to care for seedlings in pots like normal indoor plants. Repotting is only necessary when root tips protrude from the bottom of the pot. If the offshoots are nice and strong, you can also plant them outdoors until autumn.

When caring for the garden, ivy can also be wonderfully propagated by means of sinkers. Shoots are scored, bent onto the ground and covered with earth.
