As a Mediterranean plant, oleander is not only not used to the typical German winter, but would also not survive it. Although the shrub tolerates low temperatures for a short time (depending on the variety and age of the plant, down to about minus five degrees Celsius), it does not survive longer periods with deeper frosts. Oleander should therefore be cultivated in pots if possible and also overwintered frost-free.

Oleander should be overwintered frost-free

Oleander winter frost-free and cool

Frost-free means that oleanders should only be put into winter quarters when temperatures are actually forecast to be frosty. If, on the other hand, the winter is rather mild, the plant can stay outside - with appropriate protection. Conversely, of course, it is also important to bring the bucket back outside as early as possible in the spring. Otherwise, pot oleander hibernates best at around five degrees Celsius and as brightly as possible, although a dark room is sufficient for a cool hibernation if necessary. Don't forget to water the plant about once a month.

tips

If you have no possibility of a cool hibernation, then you can also store the oleander in the apartment. However, keep in mind that it must also be light during a warm hibernation.
