Orchids are becoming the most popular houseplants because they boast a wealth of tropical flowers on the windowsill. Of course, the queen of flowers does not accept every flower board behind glass. You can find out here which criteria the ideal location for orchids should meet.

Orchids thrive best in a bright, not too sunny location

These framework conditions define the ideal location

Before choosing the location for an orchid, please take a look at the light and temperature conditions in the habitat. Most of the flowers thrive as epiphytes in the rainforest. Here they are enthroned high on the branches of jungle giants, with the dense canopy of leaves mitigating the strong sun. The better the location on the windowsill simulates these conditions, the more opulent the flowers are:

  • Bright location without direct sun at noon
  • In rooms no further than 1 meter from the window
  • Warm temperatures in summer around 25 degrees, in winter not below 18 degrees Celsius
  • A high humidity of 60 to 90 percent

The west and east window sills are therefore perfectly suited for floral displays. If a curtain or awning blocks the midday sun in summer, the south-facing window sill can also be considered. In order to offer orchids tropical humidity at the same time, we recommend a bright window seat in the bathroom. On the other hand, only a few shade-tolerant orchid species are really equipped for a light-poor location on the north window.

tips

In the middle of living rooms, your most beautiful orchids are impressively presented in a terrarium. Equipped with the right accessories, the typical warm, humid rainforest climate is simulated here. You can easily compensate for the lack of light with fluorescent tubes 865 in daylight quality, such as the L 36 Watt 865 - Osram 36W.
