An orchid in full bloom finds its way into your home. Sooner or later the exotic plant will be without flowers, because no flowering period lasts forever. The demanding flower diva doesn't put her floral dress back on without further ado. Read here how to get an orchid to bloom again.

The orchid will not bloom if there is too little light

If there is a lack of light, there will be no flowering

The most popular orchid species love bright to sunny lighting conditions. Where the sun's rays do not reach the leaves and roots, the sensitive flowers sense unfavorable conditions and, as a precaution, keep the blossoms under lock and key. Please relocate an orchid without flowers to this location:

  • A window sill flooded with light on the south, west or east side of the house
  • Shaded at midday between April and October

Robust Phalaenopsis and their hybrids have nothing against repeated relocations to enjoy the sun on the south window in winter and to be protected from the blazing sun on the east window in summer.

Cold and dry air spoil the desire for a flower

The noble orchids mostly come from the humid and warm rainforest climate of the tropics. At temperatures well below 15 degrees Celsius, the warmth-loving flowers freeze so much that they lose the desire to please us with a blossom. The same applies to cultivation in dry room air. You will only get an orchid to bloom if it has a place with comfortable room temperatures and a humidity of more than 60 percent.

As an immediate measure, carry an orchid without flowers to a bright bathroom or spa room for a few weeks. Spray the sulky plant repeatedly with soft, lukewarm water. In combination with pleasant room temperatures around 20-25 degrees Celsius, flowering will not be long in coming.

An orchid does not like to flower when its feet are wet

Don't be surprised if an orchid without flowers has to stand in a permanently wet substrate. In its homeland, the flower sits on the branches of mighty giant trees to catch the raindrops of short, heavy showers with its aerial roots. You will only get the proud beauty to flower if you immediately repot the stressed diva and cut out all the rotten roots.

From now on you no longer water your orchid, but immerse the root ball once a week in lime-free, room-warm water, less often in winter. The next water bath is only on the program when the root network has dried well again.

tips

If a Phalaenopsis persistently refuses to bloom again, you can get it to bloom with a slight cold shock. Three weeks after the end of the flowering period, the unwilling butterfly orchid moves to a bright room where the temperature at night does not exceed 16 degrees Celsius and does not fall below 13 degrees Celsius. If you continue the normal care here, you can look forward to renewed flowering within 6 weeks.
