The Dipladenia is quite easy to care for, whether it is a Mandevilla or a hybrid plant like the Sundaville. In order for it to bloom profusely, however, it should be cut back regularly. You can do this before or after wintering.

Only the old shoots of the Mandevilla may be cut

Which shoots can I cut off from the Dipladenia?

Since the Mandevilla flowers on the young shoots, you may only prune the old shoots. You can safely shorten this by about two-thirds of its length. If you do not cut until late in the spring, then the plant will not produce flowers until late in the year.

As an alternative to spring pruning, you can also cut the Dipladenia in autumn before moving to its winter quarters. Then you need less space there. Be sure to overwinter the Mandevilla in a bright place and not too cold, otherwise it won't bloom as profusely as you expect, at least not next year.

Can I use the shoots as cuttings?

You can grow a Dipladenia from a cut shoot that you use as a cutting. The shoot should either still be fairly fresh or only slightly woody so that good rooting is possible.

For successful cultivation, however, the cuttings need high humidity and a temperature of at least 23°C to 27°C. Spring and summer are the best times to take cuttings. In order to achieve and maintain the ideal growing temperature, it is advisable to use an indoor greenhouse.

The essentials in brief:

  • Cut back in spring or fall
  • only use sharp and clean tools for cutting back
  • shorten old shoots by about two thirds
  • If possible, do not prune young shoots, on which the Dipladenia flowers
  • use suitable shoots as cuttings
  • a late pruned Dipladenia will also flower late

tips

Cut your Dipladenia in the spring, then you can use suitable shoots as cuttings.
