The similarity of the plants cannot be denied, but the indoor bamboo is only very remotely related to the giant bamboo or other varieties. Both belong to the grass family, just like our cereals.

The so-called lucky bamboo is often kept as a houseplant

Under the name Zimmerbambus you usually get a Pogonatherum paniceum, which is also known as Seychelles grass or bamboo grass. However, you can also cultivate different types of Babus indoors. These include, for example, Bambusa multiplex, Phyllostachys aurea or the so-called lucky bamboo.

Seychelles grass likes it particularly warm. It is best to place it in a room with temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C. It can be a bit cooler in winter, but preferably not below 16 °C. In addition, the indoor bamboo needs a lot of light and high humidity. If you can offer him these conditions, then he is quite easy to care for.

Other bamboo species suitable for indoor keeping

Similar to the room bamboo, the lucky bamboo needs a lot of warmth and is therefore well suited for the apartment. By spraying with lime-free water you increase the humidity to the level required for these plants. You can cultivate it hydroponically, in soil or even in a vase.

The Pleioblastus chino is not very large with a half to one height, but forms plenty of offshoots. If you give it a fairly large pot, the roots will have enough space. Cut off the runners regularly, so you can easily multiply this bamboo. He is welcome to spend the summer outside on the terrace or balcony.

Bamboo suitable for indoor keeping:

  • Pogonatherum paniceum (room bamboo, seychelles grass), size: 30 to 60 cm, needs a lot of warmth
  • Phyllostachys aurea (golden bamboo), size: approx. 4 m, needs little water
  • Bambusa multiplex, size: 2 to 3 m, tolerates a little frost
  • Pleioblastus chino, size: 50 to 100 cm, very tolerant of frost, forms plenty of runners
  • Dracaena sanderiana or Dracaena brownii (lucky bamboo), up to 1 m in size, needs a lot of warmth and water

tips

Indoor bamboo needs a lot of light and warmth to thrive. Consider this when choosing a location.
