Roses are among the most popular and beautiful flowers in the garden. A bouquet of roses expresses love and affection and also decorates every apartment. But the prices for roses seem exorbitant at first glance - a single, long-stemmed red rose costs at least two euros, a whole bouquet up to 100 euros. Of course, bare-root plants are cheaper, but even with these the prices are quite high compared to other garden plants. Is that justified?

Cheap roses often wither very quickly

If you buy cheap, you buy twice

First of all: roses from the discounter are of course much cheaper and sometimes you can get a real bargain there and be lucky that the bouquet of roses actually lasts a few days. Inexpensive rose plants for the garden and in pots from the supermarket rarely keep their promises. These are often goods that are brought in quickly from abroad or the hard-to-sell rejects from rose nurseries or tree nurseries - the quality is usually poor and the rose will not grow as you would hope. Of course, exceptions always prove the rule.

The effort of the breeders wants to be paid

Modern rose varieties of good or even exceptionally high quality, which are very healthy, robust and long-lived, are the result of years to decades of careful breeding. Rose breeders put a lot of energy and work into their breeds, which of course should be rewarded accordingly. The careful breeding, propagation and care of the rose and tree nurseries not only costs a lot of work, but also requires the necessary specialist knowledge.

Make roses last longer

But whether expensive or cheap, cut roses for the vase can be made to last longer with simple methods. Above all, this means that you pay attention to the good quality of the roses when you buy them: they should look fresh, not dried out and the blossoms should not have fully opened. At home you should cut the stems at an angle and place the roses in lukewarm water - the flowers do not like cold water. Use a wide-necked vase and change the water daily.

tips

Roses can also be cultivated wonderfully on the balcony or terrace in a sufficiently large and deep pot - so you can always enjoy the lush blooming flowers.
