Have you ever seen reeds tied together at the top? Do you know when and why to do that? Find out here!

Reeds don't need winter protection, but…
While reeds are hardy, they should still be prepared for the cold season by tying the fronds together at the top. It is best to take a strong piece of string and wrap it around several fronds and leaves several times. Secure the thread so that it cannot easily open.
Why are reeds tied together?
Binding the leaves together prevents moisture from penetrating the root system from above. This protects the roots from moisture and cold.
Cutting reeds before winter?
For the same reason, cutting reeds before winter sets in is strongly discouraged. If you cut back the leaves in autumn, the roots are exposed to cold and moisture and, in the worst case, can rot.
