Roses not only decorate small and large gardens, but can also be cultivated in large tubs for many years. However, so that you can enjoy your flowers for a long time, you should - after carefully considering the selection of suitable varieties - care for them in a species-appropriate manner.

Not all roses can be cultivated in pots

Bed and dwarf roses are ideal

So that you can have as much of it as possible on the balcony and terrace, the potted roses in question should bloom more often, not get too big and be fragrant. Bedding and dwarf roses are particularly ideal: they are compact, floriferous and do not grow too tall. You can also choose among the shrub and climbing roses, as long as they are not too fast-growing. Your choice is mainly limited by the size of the pots. Roses are deep-rooted and therefore need deep containers. A size of 70 x 70 centimeters is ideal for rose pots, whereby you can use pots made of wood or frost-hard terracotta, but also plastic containers. Only the dwarf roses, which have a flatter root system, can survive in balcony boxes (€109.00).

The ideal location

In order to grow healthily and thrive, all roses need a suitable location and a favorable microclimate. The most important thing is a warm and sunny location with at least four to five hours of sunshine per day. The best place should be protected from strong winds, but the air must still circulate - locations with heat build-up promote pest infestation and diseases. A little breeze should blow, but a drafty corner is not really suitable. South-east and south-west locations are particularly suitable for growing potted roses, whereas south-facing locations (especially if the plant is then directly in front of a white wall) can lead to leaf and flower burns.

Properly plant roses in pots and repot

Plant the roses in a tub in a special rose substrate that is tailored to the needs of the flowers. Also very important is a drainage layer of potsherds over the drainage holes so that they don't get blocked. Fill pebbles or expanded clay about 10 centimeters high on top of this.(19.73€) After three years, the earth should be completely replaced, you should cut back both the roots and the shoots.

tips

Place the bucket on feet (e.g. made of terracotta) so that the water can drain off better and the roses don’t get “wet feet”.
