Like many other garden plants, the sacred bamboo benefits from regular pruning. However, this plant is not, as one might assume, a "real" bamboo", i.e. a grass, but a barberry plant.

The red berries of the sacred bamboo may look appetizing but should not be eaten

Like other barberry plants, the sacred bamboo is considered slightly poisonous. The very decorative bright red fruits should not be eaten either. They appear in autumn and remain on the bush well into winter. So the sacred bamboo is not necessarily suitable for a family garden. In addition, the heavenly bamboo is only partially hardy. If the frost is too severe, its leaves will freeze.

The essentials in brief:

  • no "real" bamboo
  • poisonous
  • only conditionally hardy

tips

For a family garden where small children play, the heavenly bamboo is not so well suited. The bright red fruits are not suitable for consumption, but they do look very tempting.
