A bamboo hedge is extremely decorative and very easy to care for, provided you choose the right varieties. Bamboo phylostachus needs a rhizome barrier over the entire length of the hedge, otherwise it will become very rampant. This is not necessary with bamboo fargesia.

Which bamboo is best for a hedge?
Since bamboo fargesia does not grow rampant, you do not have to install growth barriers (rhizome barrier) with such a hedge. On the one hand, the hedge is planted much faster and, on the other hand, it is also a little easier to care for than a hedge made of rhizome-forming bamboo species. Because these often do not stick to the set limits and form meter-long foothills.
In principle, all bamboo fargesia are suitable for planting a hedge. The bright red stems of the red bamboo "Chinese Wonder" are particularly decorative. The rather fast-growing Fargesia nitida "Black Pearl" with its blackish culms also makes a very attractive hedge.
Plant a bamboo hedge
Depending on the size of the selected variety, place your bamboo plants at a distance of about 70 cm to 1 m. Put some well-rotted compost in the individual planting holes to help them grow. Since the bamboo is very thirsty, it should also be watered well. If the soil is not permeable enough, loosen it up a bit with sand or gravel.
How to care for your bamboo hedge
To keep the soil around your hedge moist longer, you can create a layer of bark mulch. Water the young bamboo well and regularly. At the latest when the bamboo rolls up its leaves, it should be watered. This is also necessary in winter, otherwise the bamboo threatens to die of thirst. It tolerates frost very well. Fargesia are hardy to about - 20 °C or - 25 °C.
How to plant a bamboo hedge:
- Choose bamboo according to location (sunny or shady)
- Planting distance approx. 70 - 100 cm
- Put compost in the planting holes
- Water the bamboo well
- Water particularly carefully in the first year and give winter protection if necessary
