The diverse amaryllis family has a filigree plant beauty from West Africa ready for your aquarium. The narrow-leaved hook lily - more aptly known as perm hook lily - rounds off the plant community of your small water world wonderfully. You can read here how easy cultivation is.

A lot of green in the aquarium not only looks beautiful, but also ensures good water quality

How to properly plant the hook lily in the aquarium

The hook lily sets the stage for its long, perm leaves as a background plant. The Crinum calamistratum fulfills this task in any tank that has a water temperature of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius and a pH value between 5.5 and 8.0. The African beauty is planted like a knight star in a pot. That is how it goes:

  • Put on gloves to avoid direct contact with the poisonous plant sap
  • Use sharp, disinfected scissors to cut off roots that are too long on the onion
  • Insert the flower bulbs into the substrate so that the upper half is not covered with soil

In search of the ideal substrate for a hook lily in the aquarium, we looked over the shoulders of experts. The DeponitMix Professional 9in1 from Dennerle has proven its worth. This is a highly developed mineral breeding ground with a long-term effect, which ensures vital rooting and an adequate supply of nutrients.

Uncomplicated claims to care

Characteristic of the narrow-leaved hook lily is a leisurely growth. To give the plant a little more vigour, we recommend locating it near the water filter. As practice shows, the plant thrives faster within light water movements. How to properly care for the amaryllis plant:

  • A continuous water change of one third per week is ideal
  • A light supply of 0.25 watts per liter creates the best framework conditions
  • The constant supply of nutrients by means of a CO2 system effectively prevents over-fertilization

If the recommended light supply is not reached, the perm hooked lily tends to wilt. In this case, the plant reaches a height of 120 cm and more, which entails an impairment of its neighbors within the plant community, especially the floating plants.

tips

Does the Narrow-leaved Hook Lily thrive in an open aquarium? Then, with a little luck, you can look forward to a splendor of white flowers in the bright location - similar to its majestic counterpart, the white-flowered amaryllis.
