Your precious amaryllis is far too good to discard after a single bloom. In fact, the South American flower beauty has a floral temperament that is more than sufficient for a perennial cultivation. We will be happy to explain to you how you can encourage your starfish to bloom every winter.

If the amaryllis is oversummered professionally, it thrives without any problems for several years

Caring for after flowering instead of disposing of it - this is how it works

When an amaryllis has finished its winter blossom festival, the mighty bulb is far from thinking about going to rest. Rather, the flowering period seamlessly flows into the summer growth phase. The visible signal is the dense tuft of leaves, which supports the formation of buds inside the tuber with nutrients. With this care program you can accompany your Ritterstern happily and happily through the summer:

  • Cut off the withered flowers and the yellowed main stem
  • From May, move the knight star with its foliage to a semi-shady spot on the balcony
  • Continue to water the plant regularly and fertilize with liquid every 14 days

This no-fuss care continues through July. In August, the amaryllis will remain in place while you gradually reduce the water supply and stop the nutrient supply altogether.

In September and October there is floral radio silence

Throughout the autumn, your knight star gathers fresh strength for the next flowering period. Ideally, the plant spends its rest period in dark quarters at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Now cut off the fully drawn-in leaves. The plant does not receive water or fertilizer.

This is how you stimulate new flowering

In November, the regeneration phase is complete. A vital knight star has now fully rooted its pot, so you repot the onion in fresh substrate. The plant then moves to a bright location with warm temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.

A slightly damp substrate signals to the amaryllis bulb that the time has come for a fresh shoot. The amount of water is increased in proportion to the growth of stems and buds. Do not apply the first fertilizer until the leaves are thriving.

tips

Whatever location an amaryllis is in during its flowering and growing season; please keep in mind that the plant is not hardy. If the temperatures fall well below 5 degrees Celsius, all hope of the breathtaking blooms disappears.
