If your knight star was granted an autumn respite, the onion sometimes has a surprise in store. If you repot your amaryllis in November, the small offshoots will immediately catch your eye. You can find out how to skilfully use the daughter bulbs for propagation here.

The amaryllis forms daughter bulbs

Recognize mature offshoots - tips on the characteristics

There is great joy when an amaryllis bulb with small offshoots presents itself. If you separate the mother and daughter bulbs too hastily, the hopes of a strong, young knight star will be disappointed. You can use these characteristics to recognize the perfect time:

  • A vital bulb has a diameter of more than 3 cm
  • The previously creamy white tuber is covered with a thin, brown skin

It is also an advantage if a cutting already has its own root strands. The better the separation from the mother tuber is coped with.

Plant and care for Amaryllis offshoots professionally - Here's how

Cut off a ripe daughter onion with a clean, sharp knife. The cuts are dusted with a little charcoal dust or rock flour (14.13€). Then, using a 14cm pot, place a potsherd over the bottom opening for drainage. As a substrate, we recommend a mix of equal parts potting soil and cactus soil, enriched with perlite (€37.51) or lava granules.(€13.99) Proceed as follows:

  • Fill the nursery pot two-thirds full with substrate
  • Insert the onion in it so that it is only half covered with soil
  • Fill the saucer with water for a few minutes until the substrate is damp

Until the beginning of the flowering period, your little one stays in the semi-shady location with ideal temperatures between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. As the first buds sprout, the knight star then takes its place on the sunny windowsill. The amount of irrigation water is increased in proportion to the growth. Please only apply the first fertilizer when the green leaves sprout.

tips

You can also obtain the seeds for propagation by sowing from knight star cut flowers. To do this, leave the bouquet in the vase until the flowers have completely withered and the seed pods are slightly open. Please put on gloves first before harvesting the poisonous seeds.
