The professional propagation of an amaryllis is not a closed book. Familiarize yourself with 2 breeding methods that are easy to do. Read here how to do it with seeds and spring onions.

Instructions for sowing
In order for a knight star to produce fruit with seeds, the flowers must be pollinated. It is enough to shake the stems from time to time to distribute the pollen. If in doubt, brush over the pistils and pollen with a soft brush. If the petals wilt and the ovary swells, the fruit will ripen within 4 to 6 weeks. Remove the seeds from the opened capsules and sow them like this:
- Fill small pots with potting soil and moisten
- Place a few seeds 5 cm apart on the substrate and just press them down
- Put a transparent hood or plastic bag over it
Germination takes 2 to 4 weeks in a partially shaded location with normal room temperatures. Keep the substrate slightly moist and air the cover daily. When the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, the hood can be removed. Maintain a young knight star continuously until the first flowering, without an autumn break.
This is how the propagation with onion bulbs succeeds
Vegetative propagation with onions is much faster and produces predictable results. If you are aiming for a young knight star with the magnificent attributes of its mother plant, proceed as follows:
- Do not separate the spring onions from the mother onion until they have a diameter of 3 cm
- Plant in potting soil so that half of them are exposed
At the semi-shady, warm window seat, water regularly and do not administer any fertilizer. When the bulbs have reached a diameter of 8 cm, repot and start the normal care program for an adult knight star.
tips
The flowers of an amaryllis always grow towards the light. A proud knight star can thus fall out of the pot if its flower stalk leans too much towards the sun. Therefore, rotate the jar 45 degrees daily to promote even growth. Automatic turntables for plants, which specialist shops offer at a reasonable price, are practical for this purpose.
