Like the Christmas rose, the lenten rose is a popular garden perennial because it is robust, requires little care and produces colorful flowers very early in the year. Unfortunately, like all hellebore species, the perennial is highly toxic.

The spring rose is poisonous from "head to toe".

Spring roses are poisonous

The lenten rose is highly poisonous in all parts:

  • leaves
  • blossoms
  • root
  • seed

The perennial contains saponin and the glycosides helleborein and hellebrin. They are similarly toxic to digitalis. In the event of accidental intake, the doctor should therefore be consulted immediately.

The plant sap is irritating to the skin. The plant also gives off an odor that triggers sneezing in sensitive people. This has also given the main species the name "hellebore". If children and pets use the garden, care should be taken when caring for spring roses.

tips

Do not plant spring roses in a too shady location. The flowers remain very small in the shade. The risk of waterlogging is also particularly high here.
