Snapdragons are ideal for growing in pots and develop into strong young plants within a few weeks. After sowing, it is important to prick out the plants so that they do not hinder each other's growth.

In order for the little snapdragons to thrive properly, they need enough space

When is the snapdragon pricked?

The cotyledons of the snapdragon appear just one to three weeks after sowing. As soon as the second or third pair of leaves forms, at which point the plants are about five centimeters tall, they are separated. Each seedling now gets its own pot in which it can continue to grow undisturbed.

How is isolated?

Proceed as follows when pricking:

  • Fill the pot with substrate, press down a little and dig a small hole in the ground with a pricking stick.
  • Use the stick to carefully lift the seedlings out of the seed tray. Be careful not to damage the tender roots of the snapdragon.
  • Place each snapdragon individually in a jar.
  • Put a little soil over the roots and water carefully.
  • A hood to create an artificial greenhouse climate is no longer required.

Water moderately but regularly

The delicate root system of snapdragons is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, but it is still necessary to ensure sufficient moisture. Water whenever the soil feels dry but without completely soaking the substrate.

Move to the open air

The closer the date of planting comes, the more often and longer you should put the snapdragons in the fresh air. They get used to the changed site conditions and continue to grow well when placed in the bed.

At first, you should not expose the little snapdragons to direct sunlight. An abrupt switch from shelter to sunshine can sunburn the leaves, causing them to wilt and fall off. This greatly delays the desired flowering.

tips

After the stress of pricking, the little snapdragons are often a bit "pricked". However, they recover quickly and then continue to sprout happily.
