Snapdragons are among the most popular flowering plants because they are extremely robust and easy to care for. They bloom from June well into fall, provided they are cared for and pruned properly. We have summarized for you in this article how you have to cut the snapdragon so that it keeps growing new flowers and blooms permanently.

Snapdragons can also be cut for the vase

Cut off the faded

So that the snapdragon does not put too much effort into seed formation and always produces fresh buds, everything that has faded must be cleaned regularly. Cut out the faded inflorescences and at the same time shorten the main shoots a few centimeters for bushy growth.

Cut back before winter

Since the naturally grown green is an excellent protection, you should not cut back the hardy snapdragon in the fall. You can often enjoy the flowers until December.

As soon as the first night frosts threaten, the plant is only protected from frost with a mulch layer of leaves and spruce branches loosely layered on top.

Cut back in spring

Cut the snapdragon back to a height of one to two handbreadths above the ground only in the spring.

The cutting rules in a nutshell:

  • Clean out faded flowers regularly, this promotes the formation of new flowers
  • Cut out the stems completely
  • Cut flowers for the vase in the morning so they last longer.
  • Remove the top inches of the shoots to encourage bushy growth.
  • Do not cut back in autumn.
  • Only in the spring is it shortened to a height of one to two hand widths.

tips

Snapdragons are long-lived vase flowers. To do this, cut the flower stalks early in the morning, because then they will last longer. Choose shoots whose bottom three to four flowers have already faded, so that the top buds in the vase also open reliably.
