Sorrels in the lawn don't like even gardeners who don't necessarily want to maintain an English golf course. The rosettes of the edible plant will grow larger over time, crowding out the lawn plants. Docks can best be fought without chemicals - but with a lot of manual work.

A tasty wild plant for some, weed for others: the sorrel

Sorrel reproduces via seeds and runners

In order to control sorrel without chemicals, it is important to stop the plant from spreading. On the one hand, no seeds should be produced, on the other hand, the roots must be completely removed.

Mow the lawn frequently and keep it fairly short. Then the sorrel flowers have no chance of fertilization and seed formation.

  • Mow the lawn short regularly
  • cut out new sorrel plants straight away
  • Use sorrel spikes
  • Pull roots completely out of the ground
  • Prevent sorrel blooms

Cut out the sorrel by hand

To remove the roots of sorrel, only manual work will help. You have to dig out the taproots one by one, trying to pull the whole root out of the ground. A special sorrel spike that penetrates deep into the ground does a good job.

To plant the dock, you should choose a day when the ground is well soaked from rain from the previous day. The earth is then loosened so that pulling is not so strenuous.

If there are larger holes, fill them up and sow new grass seed.

Proper lawn care

So that the sorrel does not spread through the lawn in the first place, you should keep the grass plants as short as possible. A stem length of three to five centimeters is ideal.

Walk the lawn regularly to discover new sorrel plants as early as possible. Cut them out immediately. Once the sorrel has established itself, you can hardly get the roots completely out of the ground.

Fighting sorrels on pastures

Studies have shown that sorrel on pastures can be controlled by intensive grazing by cows.

The cattle tolerate the plants if they are not present in large quantities. They also trample the sorrel and keep it in check.

tips

Sorrel can also be combated chemically. However, this puts a lot of strain on the floor. It also harms other plants growing in the vicinity.
