In order to indulge in a colorful tulip blossom in the middle of winter, the flower bulbs are encouraged to sprout prematurely. The procedure is less complicated than you might think. Read here how you can easily advance tulip bulbs.

Tulip bulbs often sprout without any action

Simulate winter - How to do it right

In order for tulips to delight us with their colorful splendor in the garden from March/April, they are planted in October. It is the wintry cold stimulus that is essential for flower induction. In order to motivate the flowers to bloom early, the winter weather is made to appear to them without further ado. Various methods are available for this simulation:

  • Start cold treatment in October or November
  • Fill the tulip bulbs with sand in a plastic bag and place in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator
  • Alternatively, store the bulbs in a cool, dark basement in a wooden box with sand or peat dust

The top priority for successful tunneling is a temperature level of 0 to 8 degrees Celsius over a period of 8 to 16 weeks.

Driving stratified tulip bulbs in the jar - this is how it works

Watching the stratified tulips at floral work is a fascinating spectacle. The specialist trade therefore offers glass vases especially for propelling flower bulbs. These have a bulbous base that opens up in a bowl-shaped manner with an hourglass-like constriction. How to lure out the tulip blossom in the glass:

  • Fill the lower part of the vase with soft water
  • Place a tulip bulb in the bowl with the tip pointing upwards
  • There is a small distance of 5-6 mm between the water level and the onion skins

The distance between the tulip bulb and the water must be such that the root strands reach into the water. However, direct contact with the bulbs should be avoided so that rot cannot form. At the bright, warm window seat you can look forward to the first flowers within a few days.

tips

Tulip bulbs can also be driven into substrate. For this purpose, a mix of potting soil and sand is filled into a pot that is about twice as deep as the size of the onion. A potsherd above the water drain prevents waterlogging. The tulip bulb is inserted so deep that the tip is flush with the edge of the pot. Following the cold stimulus, the first blossoms appear within 5-10 days on the bright, warm window seat.
