At the end of the flowering period, amateur gardeners are unsure how to proceed with the tulip bulbs. Read here which care measures are already setting the course for the next flowering period.

Tulip bulbs can be dug up after flowering for oversummer

Digging up tulip bulbs at the right time - this is how it works

A tulip bulb acts like a power plant. This is where the energy is generated and stored, which propels the flower stalk with the magnificent blossom into the sky. After flowering, the floral battery is almost empty. Now the remaining nutrients in the leaves are essential to create fresh reserves. How to do it right:

  • Do not cut the tulip leaves off the bulb until they are fully retracted
  • Before doing so, prune the wilted flower heads to avoid wasting energy on seed growth

You can leave the tulip bulbs in the ground after flowering. Of course, these dig deeper into the ground from year to year, only to disappear completely in the end. Better yet, dig up the bulbs and store them in a cool, dark basement until autumn.
