Due to their high water requirements, the tulip is not considered a prime example of a dried flower. However, preservation in the air is not entirely hopeless. How to properly dry tulips is no longer hidden from you here.

Dried tulip petals can be used decoratively in many ways

Fresh from the bed to the drying gallows

In the vase, tulips absorb vast amounts of water and spread their flower cups so far that the petals fall to the ground. You will not create a dried bouquet of tulips this way. Without going through the vase, there is a good chance of dried tulips. How to do it right:

  • Cut tulips in the bed or buy them in the shop with the flowers slightly open
  • Tie the ends of the stalks together with twine
  • Hang upside down on a beam in the airy, dark and dry place

After a period of 3 to 4 weeks the flowers are crackle dry. During this time, keep checking back to see if the string should be tugged a bit as the water is escaping the stems. Finally, spray the dried bouquet of tulips with hairspray, which significantly improves their durability.

Press and dry the petals - this is how it works

The most beautiful types of tulips present us with magnificent, fringed or ruffled petals. In order to enjoy this floral beauty for a long time or to use it as a creative handicraft material, the flowers are pressed and dried without further ado. How to do it:

  • Spread the undamaged petals individually on kitchen paper and leave to dry for a day
  • Then place them between parchment or greaseproof paper in a thick book
  • Ideally, stack more thick tomes on top of the book press to increase the pressure
  • Replace the parchment or greaseproof paper on top every 4 to 5 days

Telephone and dictionaries or encyclopedias are suitable as flower presses. Please only choose a book where it is not a problem if the pages could curl due to the moisture that has escaped. After a few weeks, the tulip petals will be completely dry and flat. Using tweezers, gently peel the flowers off the parchment paper to use in the desired shape.

tips

An elegant way of preserving tulips is to use two parts water and one part glycerin. Place fresh tulips in a vase with this mixture. Within 4 weeks, stems, leaves and buds take on a slightly lustrous, pliable and durable form.
