The dream of a picturesque tulip bloom remains a pious wish if you plant your tulip bulbs in the ground at the wrong time. A look at the calendar only gives a general indication of the perfect date. You can read here exactly when the time window for professional planting is open.

Tulip bulbs favor cold weather
Already early in autumn, the shelves in the garden center are crammed under the weight of an overflowing supply of flower bulbs. Anyone who succumbs to the temptation to plant tulip bulbs early will look in vain for the colorful heralds of spring next year. There's a good reason for that.
If the Golden October keeps what its title promises, the autumn temperatures will rise again to summer levels. This gives a premature boost to tulip bulb growth. After a short time, the tubers are full of juice, eagerly trying to drive out the first leaves. Inevitably, the first frost wipes out the early starters and the hopes of a magnificent tulip bloom are only wasted.
The best time is late October to mid-November
Anyone who is patient until the temperatures finally fall below the 10 degree mark has decided on the right time. Under normal weather conditions, this is the case in our regions from the middle/end of October. How to skillfully plant the flower bulbs in the ground:
- Dig small pits 15-20 cm apart in the nutrient-rich, loose soil
- The depth is at least twice the height of the bulb
- In addition, spread a layer of sand on the sole in loamy soil
Place the bulbs in the center of the planting hole with the tip pointing upwards. Then fill up with soil, press down with your hands and water. It is an advantage if you finish with mulching with compost or leaf compost.
