What would a balcony be in spring without the colorful blossom festival of magnificent tulips? In order to enjoy the floral spirit of optimism in the most beautiful season, set the course in autumn. How to plant tulips perfectly on the balcony is no longer hidden from you here.

Plant flower boxes in autumn - this is how it works
To ensure that your tulips bloom on time in spring, the flower bulbs should already be in the flower box in autumn. (€16.99) Any good potting soil can be used as a substrate, which can be given more permeability with a handful of perlite or lava granules (€13.99). Between mid-October and early December, plant tulips on the balcony according to this scheme:
- Create a water-bearing drainage system on the bottom of the box made of pebbles, broken pottery or grit
- Fill in a first layer of the enriched substrate
- Arrange large tulip bulbs side by side on the ground, with the tips pointing upwards
- Fill in another layer of substrate, up to 2 fingers below the box frame
You can now plant small tulip bulbs, such as dwarf or wild varieties, on this top layer of soil. Fill in the potting soil again, press everything down with your hands and water. In contrast to planting in the garden, you can arrange the bulbs close together without the skins touching.
The right location on the balcony
Tulip bulbs depend on the cold winter stimulus to blossom in spring. Planted balcony boxes (€109.00) stay outside during the winter. To do this, choose a sheltered location, such as in front of the south wall of the house. As a precaution, wrap the jar in jute, fleece, or foil and place it on a block of wood or a styrofoam board.
If milder weather sets in in mid/end of February, move the flower box to a sunny, warm place on the balcony.
tips
They add opulence to window boxes with tulips when you combine the flowers with evergreen dwarf shrubs or ornamental grasses. Ideal plant partners include the variegated Japanese sedge (Carex morrowii), small periwinkle (Vinca minor) or ivy (Hedera helix).
