They conjure up spring in our house. To ensure that your tulips in the vase do not run out of floral breath prematurely, it is important to take care of them properly. Browse through practical tips & tricks on how to preserve the colorful heralds of spring as cut flowers.

With the right care, tulips will last much longer in the vase

Before going under the knife

Before tulips take their place in the vase, the ends of the stems are cut to keep them fresh. To do this, use a sharp, clean knife. At a slight angle, cut off the bottom 5-6 mm of the flower stem. In this way, the pathways are exposed over a large area so that plenty of water and nutrients can be transported along this path until flowering.

The removal of the lower leaves also counts for proper placement in the vase. If the leaves get under water, there is a risk of rotting, which significantly affects their durability.

It is better to add water instead of exchanging it

Characteristic of Tulipa in the vase is her great thirst. If you want to make the spring flowers last longer, you shouldn't lack supplies. A complete replacement has a negative effect, however, as growth is promoted and the flowers fade faster. How to do it right:

  • Check the water level in the vase daily
  • When the water level has dropped, fill up with fresh water to 2 fingers below the rim
  • Only use cold water fresh from the tap

The addition of flower food is not absolutely necessary. The water contains enough nutrients to ensure the supply.

Trim off brown stalks

Each refill of fresh water is a good opportunity to inspect the flower stems. If you see any brown discoloration here, trim it down without further ado.

Keep cooler at night

An important criterion in the tulip preservation program is the choice of location. The warmer the environment, the faster the wilting progresses. In a heated living room, this may be unavoidable during the day, because even the tulip enthusiast does not want to freeze for a long shelf life. A wise compromise is to move the vase to a cooler place at night.

tips

Tulips keep growing in the vase. We recommend using tall, slender glass vases so that the beautiful flowers don't let their heads hang over the edge sooner or later. Here the cut flowers lean comfortably and keep a straight posture.
