Like pond horsetail or field horsetail, winter horsetail is fully hardy. It is therefore not necessary to overwinter the plant. Only if you grow winter horsetail in a pot do you have to ensure that it hibernates frost-free.

You do not have to hibernate winter horsetail
Winter horsetail is very hardy. Frosty temperatures do not bother the plant. The roots are so deep in the ground that it would take weeks of severe frost to freeze the roots.
You don't have to hibernate winter horsetail outdoors or by the pond. Do not cut it down in autumn either, but wait until spring to cut it back.
If the winter horsetail is grown in a tub, you must overwinter it frost-free in the pot, just like the pond horsetail.
tips
Like all horsetail species, winter horsetail tends to spread uncontrollably via stolons. It is therefore better to plant the decorative ornamental plant in a bucket.
