Horsetail belongs to the ferns. These do not form flowers, but they multiply via spores. If you want to prevent a proliferation of horsetail in the garden, you should cut these spore shoots immediately so that no spores are distributed.

Horsetails do not form flowers but spores

Horsetails do not get flowers

In the spring, small, mostly brownish shoots appear first, somewhat reminiscent of thin mushrooms. They have an ear of corn on top, in which spores are formed.

Depending on the species, the spores are blown away by the wind from the end of April to June. The horsetail also spreads to more distant places.

The spore spikes of horsetail are edible and can be eaten in salads and as vegetables.

tips

There is an important distinguishing feature between field horsetail and the poisonous marsh horsetail. In the field horsetail, the spore spike appears first. The green summer leaves only sprout when it has retracted.
