The pretty lantana comes from the temperate zones of Central America and thrives in sunny locations on slightly sandy soils. From the beginning of June until October, the small umbels of flowers open, which change their color between the opening and the end of the flowering period and make this plant particularly attractive.

The Lantana does not tolerate frost

The Lantana is not hardy

In most cases, frost not only ends flowering, but also takes a toll on the small shrub. That is why the lantana is mostly cultivated as a container plant in our region. If you have transplanted the plant into the flower bed, you have to dig it up in good time and bring it into the house. Even temperatures below five degrees can mean the end for the plant.

How do you overwinter?

You can overwinter the lantana in the living room, in a cold, bright room and even in a darkened basement room. It is only important that the temperature is constantly between five and ten degrees. The small shrub is also cut back before wintering.

The Lantana can go bald in the winter quarters

During the winter months, the lantana that is kept cool loses most of its leaves due to the changeover. However, it willingly sprout again in the spring and quickly puts on new flowers after it has turned green.

Don't forget to water

Even in the winter quarters, the pot ball must be kept constantly moist. Water moderately whenever the top inches feel dry. Waterlogging or complete soaking of the substrate should be avoided, as the plant is very prone to root rot.

When can the Lantana go outdoors again?

You can only bring the Lantana back onto the balcony or terrace when there is definitely no longer a threat of night frost. It is essential that the plant gets used to the changed conditions slowly and does not immediately place it in direct sunlight. After about two weeks, the lantana has changed and is allowed to move to its final summer place.

tips

During the winter, the lantana is very susceptible to the whitefly. Therefore, check regularly for infestation, as the tiny insects can damage the plant so badly that it dies.
