Most climbing rose varieties are quite robust specimens that can easily survive colder winters. Nevertheless, the hardy shrubs also need good winter protection in order to get through the cold season more easily. We will tell you what you should pay particular attention to.

What you should pay particular attention to when overwintering a climbing rose
First of all, it is important to choose rather robust varieties when you buy them - this is of course especially true if you live in a climatically more difficult region. You should also pay attention to the following points:
- Discontinue fertilization at the latest in early to mid-July so that the shoots can mature in good time.
- In August, the climbing rose is fertilized with patent potash.
- In the fall, pack the rose foot with a thick layer of soil.
- Spread a few twigs of spruce on it.
- If you have chosen a metal trellis, you should also pack it.
- Metal gets colder than plastic or wood and can lead to frostbite.
- In the case of very deep frosts, it makes sense to also cover the shoots with jute bags or something similar.
tips
Potted roses should be wrapped carefully and placed on a polystyrene or wooden base.
