His full potential is in his onion. It produces leaves and flowers every year. What else should you know about the onion from ornamental leeks?

The onions are the power plants of the ornamental onion

What do healthy ornamental onions look like?

If you buy the onions, you should keep your eyes peeled! The onions are closely inspected. It is not uncommon for onions to creep in if they are stored incorrectly, which are mouldy, rotten, shriveled or otherwise look unhealthy.

You can recognize healthy onions when you buy them, among other things, by the fact that they are white-yellow to yellowish in color. The onion skin is dry and relatively clean (free from traces of mould). In addition, the onions should be round, plump and firm.

How deep do you plant the bulbs and where?

When you have found the right bulbs of a variety that appeals to you, it's time to plant them:

  • don't wait too long to plant
  • sunny to partially shaded location (the bigger, the sunnier)
  • in a loose, well drained soil
  • 10 to 15 cm deep

A healthy onion needs nourishment

In order for the onion to produce a magnificent bloom every year, it needs, above all, a lot of nutrients. She pulls them out of the ground first. Then she bunkers them partly in the leaves and in the stem. It is recommended to 'feed' this plant with compost every year.

There are other facts you should know. This means that the onions contain all the power of the plant. The onions draw nutrients from the leaves until the leaves are completely yellow and dried up. The leaves should not be cut off or removed in any other way beforehand.

It is also important to know that onions:

  • do not tolerate moisture
  • are not always hardy (depending on the type/variety)
  • best planted in autumn between September and November
  • form the basis for propagation by means of onion bulbs

tips

The bulbs of frost-sensitive species and varieties should be dug up in autumn and overwintered indoors.
