Originally native to Australia, the Bottlebrush looks fantastic both as a tree and as a shrub. Why not duplicate it as? There are two proven methods, one of which is more difficult…

The cylinder brush can be propagated, for example, by cuttings

Pruning to get cuttings

The easiest way for hobby gardeners is to propagate by cuttings. It is best to use top cuttings that are flowerless and semi-lignified. It would be ideal to combine propagation with a pruning of the cylinder brush.

Here's how to do it:

  • Cut 10 cm long head cuttings (alternatively tear off cuttings)
  • remove lower leaves
  • put in about 7 cm wide pots with potting soil
  • Keep the soil moist and cover with a plastic hood if necessary
  • optimal temperature for rooting: 18 to 20 °C
  • Rooting period: 6 to 8 weeks
  • Location for rooting: bright, but without direct sun

Between February and March or between August and September is the right time for the propagation of cuttings. The plants should be indoors or on the sheltered balcony. During the winter they should not be hibernated outside, but placed inside.

Plant out after rooting

After the cuttings are securely rooted - you can tell by the new leaves - they can be planted out in spring or summer. Choose a location with the following characteristics:

  • airy but sheltered from the wind
  • sunny to semi-shady
  • protected from winter sun
  • the plants can also be kept in the room (tolerate dry room air)

Grow the Callistemon from seeds

Sowing is also possible - albeit more difficult than propagating by cuttings. In nature, this plant is only sown after a bush fire. Their capsule fruits are so hard that they only break open and release their seeds when exposed to fire.

When sowing the seeds, keep the following in mind:

  • hard capsule fruits z. B. break up over a candle flame
  • Sow seeds in spring
  • Caution: Seeds are wafer-thin!
  • sow in potting soil
  • Seeds germinate in the light, so do not cover them with soil
  • Keep soil moist with spray bottle
  • ideal germination temperature: 15 °C
  • Preserved plants are less floriferous than specimens propagated by cuttings

tips

The growing plants should be fertilized every two weeks. The reason: Bottle brushes are heavy feeders.
